Environment & sustainability at Idre Himmelfjäll

From the very beginning, Idre Himmelfjäll was built with consideration for the mountain environment, natural values, and the local culture that exists here. For us, sustainability is about continuing to develop the mountain with respect for nature, culture, and the surrounding environment.

Respect for nature as the area grows

As Idre Himmelfjäll has developed, consideration for the environment and natural values has been part of the work. In the supporting materials for new parts of the area, mountain arnica, mature pines, and old dead trees are among the values identified as important to take into account. Old trees and dead wood can be very important for biodiversity because they provide habitats for, among other things, insects, fungi, mosses, and lichens.

Same culture and reindeer husbandry as part of the mountain's history and present day

Reindeer husbandry and Sami culture are part of the history of this place, but also its present. Idre Himmelfjäll is located in an area where that heritage is still alive. Therefore, collaboration with Idre Sameby and an understanding of the conditions for reindeer husbandry are an important part of how the area develops. With us, there is an opportunity to meet reindeer and learn more about Sami culture. This gives more guests a closer understanding of the mountain as a place, not just as a destination.

Local partnerships that belong here

For us, sustainability is also about working together with actors who are close by and have a clear connection to the place. Through local partnerships, more parts of the stay have a natural connection here in Idre and in the mountain environment around it. This is reflected in the activities and experiences offered to our guests, where collaborations with, among others, Idre Sameby, local snowmobile rentals, and dog sledding become part of the whole. It provides more ways to experience the mountains than just through skiing and contributes to a vibrant local community.

Food with a connection to the place

Sustainability can also be about what is served on the plate. At Idre Himmelfjäll, we want the food to have a clear connection to the mountain and the surrounding region. This is reflected in flavors and ingredients such as smoked reindeer meat, moose, salmon, mushrooms, celeriac, and lingonberries.

At Renen & Älgen, for example, there is pizza with smoked reindeer meat, frozen moose roast, and cured salmon on the menu. This makes the food part of the experience of Idre Himmelfjäll beyond the slopes as well.

A direction that needs to be noticed

For us, sustainability is not something that should just be in a text. It should be noticeable when you are here, in how the mountain develops, in the consideration given to nature and culture, and in the collaborations we want to grow around us.

We want to continue developing Idre Himmelfjäll with care for the mountain and respect for what exists here.
