Meeting with reindeer at Idre Himmelfjäll

An exciting activity for the whole family

Meeting reindeer up close is an experience that both children and adults remember for a long time. The children get to meet the reindeer in real life, hear stories about life in the mountains, and learn more about Sami culture.

The peaceful time around the fire becomes a nice break from skiing and other activities - perfect when you want to experience something different during your stay in Idre Himmelfjäll.

Meeting the Reindeer

During this activity, you get to get close to the reindeer and experience an authentic moment in a mountain setting.

Together with the reindeer herder, you gather at the Sami campsite, where you sit on reindeer hides around a fire. Coffee is brewed over an open fire, and you will have the opportunity to sample simple tastings while the reindeer are nearby.

Meanwhile, the reindeer herder tells you about life in the Sami village, the importance of the reindeer, and the eight seasons that govern reindeer husbandry. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, take photos, and learn more about the reindeer and their life in the mountains.

The activity begins with you meeting the reindeer herder at the parking area by the Sami campsite. From there, you walk together about 300 meters along a packed snowmobile trail to the Sami campsite where the experience takes place.

Reindeer meeting is closed for the season and will reopen in winter 2026-2027

Practical information

• The activity is suitable for children from 5 years old.

• Dress in warm clothes and warm shoes, as the activity takes place outdoors.

• The activity is held in Swedish with a summary in English.

• The activity must be booked in advance.

Meeting point

• Follow Polstjärnegatan at the southern entrance to Idre Himmelfjäll for about 800 meters.

• Then follow the signs toward “Samevistet” and turn left.

• Park in the parking lot at the samevistet.

• From there, walk about 300 meters along a groomed snowmobile track where the guide will meet you.

Reindeer Encounter + Snowmobile Tour

Would you like to combine the encounter with the reindeer with a little more adventure, you can choose a reindeer encounter together with a snowmobile tour.

In collaboration with Idre Skoter & Motor, you will join a snowmobile tour through the mountain landscape with the destination of the Sami settlement. Here you will meet the reindeer and at the same time learn more about Sami culture and reindeer herding in the Idre Sámi village.

The experience combines nature, culture, and mountain scenery in a unique way and is perfect for those who want to experience more of the mountains during their stay.
